FAQ Answers

"What's your source authority for the English language?"

My favorite reference materials in printed form are the Cambridge Grammar of English, The Cambridge Guide to English Usage, The New York Times Manual of Style and Usage and The Associated Press Guide to Punctuation.

Of the relevant websites with which I'm acquainted, I like www.bartleby.com, www.thefreedictionary.com and www.reference.com. The Cambridge online dictionary shows pronunciation with the International Phonetic Alphabet; www.refdesk.com and www.libraryspot.com deserve special mention because of their very extensive links to more specialized sites.
